  1. Circuit City…That place sucks!
I walked in that place once and could not find a person at a register to buy anything.
The store is setup like shit and no one is ever at the store.

  2. As someone who has done 4 IVF treatments (unsuccessfully) and has had three additional gynecological surgeries, I say very much that it is the “right” way if it works. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to have a child naturally and that does not mean they shouldn’t be a parent.

On a lighter note - I HATE CIRCUIT CITY too! I bought my first computer from them and it was the worse mistake I ever made and it died on my when I was studying for finals in my first semester at law school - it couldn’t have happened at a worse time! And with their horrendous lack of customer service, it made a horrible situation even worse.

  3. Congrats on the new show!

I have to say, you guys (while I love you) are way off base on the IVF thing. Before you can even start IVF, you spend hours with your doctor discussing the various options and ways NOT to have multiple births.

And, for those with no ethical or moral problems with it, if a pregnancy resulted in multiple births, the Doctor can and will eliminate all but the healthiest fetuses — this is done because having more than triplets puts serious harm on all the fetuses and can kill the mother.

You have to sign form after form agreeing to all of this. A normal consult can last 3-4 hours.

These “six children conceived from “IVF” stories are usually people who have not followed the doctor’s advice or the doctor was irresponsible and put in too many fertilized eggs to begin with.

We have been to several IVF doctors across the northeast, and they are very strict and firm over the prevention of multiple (more than twins) births. And one doctor told us if we objected to his advice on this (we did not) he would not allow us to proceed.

“Adopt instead” sounds charming, but very hard. You have to be willing to take troubled older children (which the Bean and I tried to do) or be wealthy and go to an adoption mill. Or, you can devote 4 months of your life to live in China so you can bring home a baby girl. Those are the options.

If someone does not want or care to have children more power to them. But some want to — some for ego reasons, some to make a real difference in a child’s life.

Infertility is a terrible punishment for us “breeder” types.

  4. Christiaan & Bean

Wow…I am not sure what happened here?

I get the feeling that you might have the wrong idea as to the position AJ and myself have about fertility treatments.

Let start with what AJ and I were talking about. I am all for any couple that is infertile to try any type of safe medical treatments that may result in the birth of healthy child. I am not condemning that at all. I know that AJ is with me on this.

Maybe it was hard to hear our specific point in that conversation on Queerspresso. What we objected to was those couples that allow 4-8 embryos during artificial fertilization. I see this as a great danger to the mother and very dangerous for 4-8 fetuses, if not fatal for both mother and child. I think this is a bit reckless, medically speaking.

Thank you for letting us know that physicians recommend only two embryos be implanted. This makes sense.

In regards to the adoption comments, I remember that we fully recognized the trouble that you and Bean have had in regards to formal adoption

So, I hope we did not offend you and Bean. That was never our intent.

  5. Your “breeders” statement left AJ and myself a little confused.

I am not sure what your emphasis was there, Christiaan.

  6. I am confused as to your confusion — really I am?.

    Comment by Christiaan Huygens — 06-19-2007 #

  7. Oh, I see, disregard last statement. By “breeders” I mean people who feel the compulsive need to have children. Sometimes, many times it is used to connote straight people. But take it from me, after taking the amount of adoption classes we did, there are some high strung LGBT breeders out there just like the Bean and I!

    Comment by Christiaan Huygens — 06-19-2007 #

  8. And I was not offended by your show, I loved it! — and I enjoyed sharing my knowledge of IVF with someone. We sat through enough of those boring classes — so it was good to impart some knowledge!

  9. Silence, is golden, golden (but my eyes still see. . .)

    (That was from Frankie Avalon)

    Where is the response?

    You guys are no fun.

And yes, I am a breeder! (a failed one, but a breeder just the same)

    That’s me

    Comment by Bean — 06-19-2007 #

  10. The use of the word “breeder” is quite derogatory and insulting in gay speech and culture. It is a word that a gay person would not use to describe his heterosexual friends and family.

The word is rarely used with any positive meaning or intent.

    Comment by Tigger .:. — 06-20-2007 #

  11. Correct, it is mostly used a a dergatory word for straight people. I was once asked to leave a meeting on LGBT issues because I was a “breeder”

But in this instance, it is what people adoption classes dergatorly call those who can be pregnant or have the compulsive need to be pregnant out of jealously. Also not a a good reason to use it.

In any event, for the record — for those who did not listen to your show, it was I who used the word “breeder” in the comment sections of this blog — AJ nor Tigger NEVER used this word or even thought about it on this show.

Thank you for the sensitivity on the word Tigger — i am sure most in the LGBT community share your viewpoint — but in my line of work — I am called that a lot, by people who should know better. It normally does not bother me, usually said in jest, but I can see how it can be used in a cruel manner.

In this instance, since I am refering to myself, straight, been called that word, and actually do want to breed I am ok using it in the context it was used.

I guess it goes back to the argument (which you may not agree with) that some people and groups can use certain words or slang while other should not.

In any event great show and great discussion. (Although you have the Bean all hopped up)

  12. Wow. Comments all over! I liked this episode… some of it got me all fired up! :)

    Comment by Forrest — 06-21-2007 #

  13. WOW! Lots of comments on this one. Tigger and AJ, very good show. You two are great together! I have a hard time thinking of people using IVF and having 5 babies just to get free stuff. But then again I still think my aunt had more kids just to keep on the welfare system. It would be sad to think that that would be the case though.

I am very guilty of using the “breeders” term, or saying to one of my gay friends with kids that “You once bred”. And chances are I will say it many times to come. But perhaps now it will make me think of Christiaan and Bean and I will be shamed into dropping it from my vocabulary. And being kicked out of a meeting for being het?? Seriously?? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard!

Tigger I have to agree with you sometimes it is hard to understand a culture or religion that would not only accept, but encourage, honor-killings. But, like you, I want to know more about the religion.

Looking forward to your next show!

  14. Just another note, IVF is a VERY expensive process that is usually not covered by insurance so people are paying $15,000+ for the treatment - so spending a ton of money to hopefully, maybe get free stuff? I don’t think so.

Also, the decision on the number to put in is heartbreaking. I remember crying profusely trying to decide on the number b/c I was totally against “getting rid of one” if there were too many. It is probably the hardest decision I had ever had to make. It was awful each of the fourt times Christiaan and I decided and I cried and panicked each time. I had three embryos put in twice - and none of them work. Sometimes you put in more than 2 b/c their quality as a whole are not as good so it’s less likely they will work. That is what happened to us.
